The centre of Linguaglossa is about 42 km from Catania city; it is situated at 550m a.s.l. with a territory of 58.38 km² and 5540 inhabitants.
Linguaglossa is a centre that is rich in hazel nuts and wine production.
Norman in origin, it was ruled by local lords and in 1626 received the title of principality under Bonanno rule.
In 1634, the inhabitants recovered it with a levy of 80 thousand scudi, and by proclamation of King Phillip IV the town became "CIVITAS DILECTA INTEGRA", a motto that still appears on the commune coat of arms.
From an artistic perspective, it is worth mentioning the beautiful wooden case in the chiesa dei padri Cappuccini (church of the Capuchin priests). splendidly decorated by the artist Pietro Bencivinni from Polizzi, it was carved around 1710, at the request of Baroness Nicosia because her son had become a friar.

It is also worth mentioning that the other churches with architectonic characteristics represent the artistic patrimony most consistent with Linguaglossa: the Church of Saint Egidio (1400), patron saint of Linguaglossa. Recent restoration has brought to light 400m² of frescoes hidden under the plaster, located in the oldest part of the church; the Chiesa Madre dedicated to Madonna delle Grazie, was built in 1613. The facade of the church is a combination of lava rock and sandstone and inside it is rich with fine paintings from the 800’s. But the most important work is located behind the main altar, the wooden choir dating from 1728. Finally, the Church of San Francesco di Paola, next to the city hall, is rich with frescoes from the 700’s and what's more, the statue of Madonna di Loreto by Gaggini is housed here.
Linguaglossa, due to its location and natural patrimony such as the 1500-hectare Ragabo pine forest, better known as the Linguaglossa pine forest, the highest parkland in Sicily, is considered one of the biggest tourist spots both in summer and in winter.
Piano Provenzana is the departure point for the ski facilities, which are currently undergoing modernisation after the disastrous eruption of October 2002 that destroyed slopes, shelters, hotels, the ski school and businesses. However, in spite of everything, Linguaglossa and its pine forest are still a destination for day-trippers and tourists all over the world as well as for snow and ski enthusiasts.

Linguaglossa, nature all year round!!!
